Severe Winter Weather Checklists

Feb 2, 2015 0

ARE YOU READY?

Prepare for extremely cold weather every winter—it’s always a possibility. There are steps you can take in advance for greater wintertime safety in your home. Although periods of extreme cold cannot always be predicted far in advance, weather forecasts can sometimes provide you with several days’ notice. Listen to weather forecasts regularly and check your emergency supplies whenever a period of extreme cold is predicted.

FOR YOUR HOME

Insulate walls and attic.
Caulk and weather-strip doors and windows.
Install storm windows or cover windows with plastic from the inside.
Insulate any water lines that run along outer walls. This will make water less likely to freeze.
Service snow-removal equipment.
Have chimney and flue inspected.
Install easy-to-read outdoor thermometer.
Repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on your home or other structure during a storm.

Communication
Cell phone
Portable charger, and extra batteries

Heating
Extra blankets
Sleeping bags
Winter coats
Hats
Socks
Gloves
Fireplace with plenty of dry firewood or a gas log fireplace
Portable space heaters or kerosene heaters

Safety
Chemical fire extinguisher
Smoke alarm in working order (Check prior to winter storm season and change batteries, if needed.)
Carbon monoxide detector (Check prior to winter storm season and change batteries, if needed.)
First-aid kit
Rock-salt to melt ice on walkways
Supply of cat litter or bag of sand to add traction on walkways

Lighting
Battery-powered flashlights or lanterns
Candles
Glow Sticks

Food
Drinking water

  • Leave all water taps slightly open so they drip continuously.
  • Keep the indoor temperature warm.
  • Allow more heated air near pipes. Open kitchen cabinet doors under the kitchen sink.
  • If your pipes do freeze, do not thaw them with a torch. Thaw the pipes slowly with warm air from an electric hair dryer.
  • If you cannot thaw your pipes, or if the pipes have broken open, use bottled water or get water from a neighbor’s home.
  • Fill the bathtub or have bottled water on hand.
  • In an emergency, if no other water is available, snow can be melted for water. Bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute will kill most germs but won’t get rid of chemicals sometimes found in snow

Canned/no-cook food (bread, crackers, dried fruits)
Non-electric can opener
Baby food and formula (if baby in the household)
Prescription drugs and other medicine

Car and Emergency Checklist
Minimize travel, but if travel is necessary, keep the following in your vehicle:

  • Cell phone, portable charger, and extra batteries
  • Shovel
  • Windshield scraper
  • Battery-powered radio with extra batteries
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Water
  • Snack food
  • Extra hats, coats, and mittens
  • Blankets
  • Chains or rope
  • Tire chains
  • Canned compressed air with sealant for emergency tire repair
  • Road salt and sand
  • Booster cables
  • Emergency flares
  • Bright colored flag or help signs
  • First aid kit
  • Tool kit
  • Road maps
  • Compass
  • Waterproof matches and a can to melt snow for water

Virgin Hair Maintenance Tips

Jan 28, 2015 0

Get the full benefits of your virgin hair

In order to get the full benefits of your virgin hair maintenance, & care is an important part of maintaining longevity and shine. Keeping your hair extensions in tip top shape can be very tricky! The key to maintaining your investment starts from the day of receiving your hair/bundles.

• Virgin Hair should be treated as your own hair and cleansed regularly to maintain the health and shine of the hair.

• Once you receive your hair extensions always inspect the hair before installing it. Leave the bundles intact. If there are any issues with the hair you should notice it at this time.

• Always co-wash the hair before you have it installed. This is highly recommended for all 100% virgin hair. This should be done in order to transform the hair from it’s steam-processed state to it’s natural state.

• Do not cut your wefts/tracks. This causes the thread to unravel and create shedding and matting issues. If you must cut your tracks seal the wefts with weft sealer.

• To keep your hair and extensions properly moisturized. You should purchase a good natural oil such as argan oil, to prevent the hair from drying out and also give your hair a nice and healthy glow without weighing your hair down.

• A wide tooth comb and a paddle brush are the best tools to use when detangling your hair. It’s always best to detangle your hair before you wash and/or curl it. Be sure to section your hair off when brushing and detangling.

• Co-washing will add more moisture to your hair. You can co-wash your hair as often as you like. Some shampoos will strip the hair of all it’s moisture and the hair will become dry and tangled. Instead of always shampooing and conditioning, only condition (co-wash) your hair for 15- 30 minutes. The longer you deep condition your hair the softer and luxurious it becomes. Allow your hair to air dry for the best results!

• To avoid frizz never rub your hair with a towel, which can make frizz worse. Instead you should pat your hair dry.

• When coloring your hair extensions, please consult with a licensed professional before any coloring. Some hair colors must be achieved in steps, you may fry your hair extensions if not done properly! Any type of chemical altering strips the cuticle of the hair (at this point your virgin hair is no longer considered virgin hair).

• Heat is your hair biggest enemy. The more you use hot styling tools the shorter the life span of your hair. Use heat in moderation. High temperatures can damage the hair, including permanently altering the hair texture. Always use heat protectant! I highly recommend using flexi rods, perm rollers & steam rollers for curling your hair. Not only will your curls last longer but your hair won’t have any heat damage.

• It is important to manage your hair before you go to bed. Tie your hair up at night with a silk/satin scarf or a silk/satin bonnet. For wavy/curly textures I recommend putting 3-5 large twist or braids in your hair then placing it under a scarf or bonnet. For Straight textures I recommend wrapping your hair then placing it under a silk/satin scarf. Following this nightly routine will make your extensions last longer, look better, and prevent tangling which leads to excessive shedding.

5 Tips To Keep Your Car Clean and Organized

Dec 10, 2014 0

By Dorsey Mobile Detailing

1. Throw Trash Away:   Keep a trash bag in your car or recycle a plastic cereal box or soap  dish container to make a trash can just for the car.

2. Whatever goes into the car goes out. We seem to have an overabundance of plastic cups, sweaters, and books. Make sure your kids get their stuff out of the car when they get out.

3. Organize what needs to stay in the car. I have a large utility tote from 31 Gifts that I keep in the back of my car. I keep my jumper cables, emergency kit, and first aid kit in there. It keeps the back of my Jeep clutter free and organized.

4. .Use a bit of baking soda to deodorize your carpets. Sprinkle a bit of baking soda on your carpets and seats to eliminate odors. I try to vacuum at least once a month. Before I vacuum, I use a spoon and a box of baking soda to keep my car from smelling like a garbage bin.

5. Keep a box of baby wipes in your car for cleaning. You can wipe down your interior and widows with baby wipes. This is an easy task you can do in very little time, maybe while you’re waiting in the school pick-up line? They also come in handy for spills.

At Dorsey Mobile Detailing, we know you take pride in the appearance of your vehicle and that’s why we use only the finest products available to give your vehicle a brilliant shine.

“What is the difference between you guys and the car wash down the street?”
We are a completely mobile service. You don’t have to spend any time driving and waiting in line. We do everything by hand, which is the best way for your paint. At the wash down the way they run your car through a machine to wash and dry it as quickly as possible. There is no attention to detail.

5 Things to Consider Before Signing an Independent Contractor Agreement

Nov 24, 2014 0

By Connie Alsobrook

There are some advantages working as an independent contractor, because it allows you the freedom to work on your own terms. However there are greater advantages for employers to classify you as a independent contractor. Only you can decide what the best decision is for you from your taxes to freedom.

1. Control. If you are told the time, place and how you work. If you are given a certain time to be at work and penalized for not adhering to it. Independent Contractors work when, where, and how they choose.

2. Financial Control. Employees are normally paid by the hour, day, or week. Contractors are usually paid by the job and invoices are submitted. A contractor has the room to make a profit or take a loss than an employee. If you employee is making a bigger profit than you are, then there is a great chance you are an employee.

3. Training. If the company pays for training or none paid training on how to do your job that is a clue you are an employee. Employees can give an independent contractor small instructions as to how the end job should be. Contractors are usually already having degrees, and the training to do the job ore they would not have been sought out.

4. Evaluations. If you are evaluated in any way about the process, methods, and details of how your job is being done, it’s a chance you are an employee. Contractors usually contact the company if they have concerns, question, or issues on how the process of the job if going.

5. Opportunity to work elsewhere. Contractors are free to take work from other companies and advertise as such. If you are banned from working for other companies or industries, it may be best to be a consultant and work as a contractor.

Just because you sign an Independent Contractor Agreement does not exclude the employer from being penalized by The Department of Labor and The Internal Revenue Service. If think you have been misclassified as independent contractor and want to take action contact The Department of Labor (DOL). DOL has an outline of determining if you were misclassified.

Obtaining A Mortgage When You’re Self-Employed

Nov 20, 2014

By: Steph Medeiros

As intimidating as buying a home is to a traditional employee, to those who are self-employed, it can seem unattainable. However, with the proper knowledge and by following a few extra steps, a qualified self-employed buyer can become a home owner.

According to the United States Department of Labor, approximately 10,507,000 Americans are self-employed, with about 1 million more reporting self-employment as a secondary source of income. With the current economic climate, self-employment has boomed, rising along with corporate down sizing and telecommuting capabilities. While many mortgage lenders are aware of the increase in self-employed loan candidates, they still consider them to be higher risk borrowers.

Some Things You Might Encounter As A Self-Employed Borrower:

* Higher Interest Rates

* Reduced Ability To Negotiate

* Higher Down Payment Requirement

* More Paperwork

As someone who is self-employed, mortgage lenders may see you as a less-attractive loan candidate. Expect to be quoted higher interest rates than what you might see on the company’s website or advertisement. Those rates are typically for people who are considered ideal borrowers due to verifiable incomes and excellent credit scores.

Lenders may also want to see a lower loan-to-value ratio, which will require a larger down payment. As for the extra paperwork, you won’t be able to provide your lender with W2s for the past couple years like traditionally-employed borrowers. Instead, you’ll need to provide things like tax returns from the previous year, a current business license, a letter from your accountant, and financial statements showing the income and value of your business.

Simple and Healthy Diabetic Dinners for the Whole Family

Nov 14, 2014 0

By: April Langdon

For families dinner is the central meal of the day. It’s the meal you are most often to partake together. Sharing not only the meal, but also the events of the day. Sharing the things that went well, as well as those that didn’t.

Making a diabetic dinner that everybody in the family wants to eat does not need to be a trial. If you follow some easy guidelines then you are most of the way there.

A dinner for diabetics does not need to be made out of any out of the ordinary ingredients or have anything other than the ingredients that are easily available at your local supermarket.

There is no need to prepare a different meal for the diabetic at the dinner table. In fact regardless of how many diabetics you may have in your family if everyone in the family eats using the strategy for a healthy diabetic dinner then everyone in the family is moving towards better health.

The basic guidelines for a diabetic dinner are also the guidelines for a healthy meal.

A diabetic dinner needs to be:

  • high in fiber
  • low in fat, sugar and salt
  • half full of vegetables

There may be some specific requirements for the diabetics in your family, taking into account what is required to balance their blood sugars that day. But in following these easy guidelines you are 80% of the way there.

Here are two swift, delicious meal ideas that everybody in the entire family will enjoy. They are both so easy that nearly anyone in the family can prepare them. They are suitable for all ages and are high in fiber, low in fat, sugar and salt and are half full of vegetables.

Ten Minute Tortillas

Take a tortilla (the better quality and more wholemeal the better) and line it with lettuce and sliced tomato, fill with a mix of heated canned beans and salsa, top with low-fat cheese and roll up. Serve with a salad (include as many different colored vegetables as you can) and brown rice.

Super Quick and Easy Chilli Beans

Brown 400g lean ground mince and pour off any excess fat, add 1 cup each of chopped or grated onion, celery, carrot, capsicum, 1 1/2 cans of low salt canned tomatoes, 1 can kidney beans, 1 t chilli powder, 1 t cumin, 1 t oregano (or have fun experimenting with some different spices) and cook until flavour has developed. Serve with some steamed broccoli and brown rice on the side.

10 Diabetes Superfoods

Nov 5, 2014 0

Ever see the top 10 lists for foods everyone should eat to superpower your diet? Ever wonder which will mesh with your diabetes meal plan? Wonder no more. Your list of the top 10 diabetes superfoods has arrived.

As with all foods, you need to work the diabetes superfoods into your individualized meal plan in appropriate portions.

All of the foods in our list have a low glycemic index or GI and provide key nutrients that are lacking in the typical western diet such as:

  • calcium
  • potassium
  • fiber
  • magnesium
  • vitamins A (as carotenoids), C, and E.

There isn’t research that clearly points to supplementation, so always think first about getting your nutrients from foods. Below is our list of superfoods to include in your diet.

 Beans

gnn anti-aging-red-kidney-beans

Whether you prefer kidney, pinto, navy, or black beans, you can’t find better nutrition than that provided by beans. They are very high in fiber, giving you about 1/3 of your daily requirement in just a ½ cup, and are also good sources of magnesium and potassium.

They are considered starchy vegetables, but ½ cup provides as much protein as an ounce of meat without the saturated fat. To save time you can use canned beans, but be sure to drain and rinse them to get rid of as much sodium as possible.

 Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

gnn green leafy veg.

Spinach, collards, kale – these powerhouse foods are so low in calories and carbohydrate. You can’t eat too much.

 Citrus Fruit

gnn citrus_fruits

Grapefruit, oranges, lemons and limes. Pick your favorites and get part of your daily dose of soluble fiber and vitamin C.

 Sweet Potatoes

gnn sweet potatoes

A starchy vegetable packed full of vitamin A and fiber. Try in place of regular potatoes for a lower GI alternative.

 Berries

gnn blueberries

Which are your favorites: blueberries, strawberries or another variety? Regardless, they are all packed with antioxidants, vitamins and fiber. Make a parfait alternating the fruit with light, non-fat yogurt for a new favorite dessert. Try our Superfood Smoothie recipe.

 Tomatoes

gnn tomatoes

An old standby where everyone can find a favorite. The good news is that no matter how you like your tomatoes, pureed, raw, or in a sauce, you’re eating vital nutrients like vitamin C, iron, vitamin E.

Fish High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

gnn salmon

Salmon is a favorite in this category. Stay away from the breaded and deep fat fried variety… they don’t count in your goal of 6-9 ounces of fish per week.

 Whole Grains

gnn wheat

It’s the germ and bran of the whole grain you’re after.  It contains all the nutrients a grain product has to offer. When you purchase processed grains like bread made from enriched wheat flour, you don’t get these. A few more of the nutrients these foods offer are magnesium, chromium, omega 3 fatty acids and folate.

Pearled barley and oatmeal are a source of fiber and potassium.

 Nuts

gnn walnuts

An ounce of nuts can go a long way in providing key healthy fats along with hunger management. Other benefits are a dose of magnesium and fiber.

Some nuts and seeds, such as walnuts and flax seeds, also contain omega-3 fatty acids.

 Fat-free Milk and Yogurt
gnn yogurt

Everyone knows dairy can help build strong bones and teeth. In addition to calcium, many fortified dairy products are a good source of vitamin D. More research is emerging on the connection between vitamin D and good health.

Some of the above list can be tough on the budget depending on the season and where you live. Look for lower cost options such as fruit and vegetables in season or frozen or canned fish.

Foods that every budget can live with year round are beans and rolled oats or barley that you cook from scratch

Voting Tips

Oct 27, 2014 0

United States General Elections November 4, 2014

Ensure that you are registered to vote. Call your city’s clerk or verify by calling 1-866-OUR-VOTE. If you are not registered, you can’t vote.
Be sure you know where you’re polling location is (It will say on your voting card). Remember that it may have changed since the last time you voted. If you can vote at more than one location, ask around to find out which one will be the least crowded.
Vote early if you can. Allow yourself plenty of time because the traffic might be bad and the lines may very well be long. Be sure you know what time your polls open so you can schedule it.
Remember to bring your ID information. Be sure you have a valid ID, passport and/or drivers license when you vote. Check with state requirements to find out what types of ID are required for you to vote in your state. If you’re not sure, bring EVERYTHING, including a photo ID.
It is not advisable to wear campaign shirts, pins and such when you go in to vote. Some states don’t allow this. Play it safe and dress neutral.
Wear comfortable shoes and dress ready to wait. If it’s cold outside, be sure you bring a coat. Maybe you can also bring something to read.
Avoid long lines by voting in the mid-morning or early afternoon. These are proven to be the lightest times of the voting day.
Ignore false rumors. Despite what you’ve heard, you can not be denied the right to vote because of a foreclosed home, being behind on child support payments, being a college student away from home or other frivolous reasons. But be careful. Read This
Help others to vote. Assist the elderly, the disabled and those without transportation.
Know your state laws with regard to your voting rights. Google your home state for applicable voting requirements. They vary by state. Time Off Laws
Be nice to the people voting for the opposing candidate. We are all brothers. Despite the animosity you see on TV (by many that know better), this is not the way to act. We must be respectful of those voting for another candidate.
If your ballot has little circles to fill in, be sure you fill them in solid with a dark pen.
Even if it gets late and the polls will close soon, if you are standing in line, you will get to vote. So make sure you at least have time to make it to that voter line. If they have problems finding your name, insist that they check again. If that still fails, insist on being allowed to cast a provisional ballot.
Report any voting problems or suspicions to Election Protection. Their number is 1-866-OUR-VOTE or visit 866ourvote.org.
Reference your ACLU website. There is a lot of information on voting rights specified by individual states. Here are the Voting Rights for Virginia for example.

Beauty care – 7 beauty tips

Oct 18, 2014 0

By Michael Fortomas

Let’s talk about inner beauty care. True beauty begins from the inside out. Outer beauty will only appear when you’ve practiced beauty within.

Beauty care is one of the problems that most women (and men) of all ages face. Beauty, or the lack of it, is pretty much a state of mind. . .well almost. There are beauty tips for Hair Styles, Nails, Skin Care, Body and Shape, Weight Loss, Exercise, Fashion and Style, Inner Beauty and more.

Let’s talk about inner beauty care. True beauty begins from the inside out. Outer beauty will only appear when you’ve practiced beauty within.

Knowing how and what to eat, can make a huge difference in how you feel. Improper eating habits can cause depression, overweight, illness and an overall lethargy.

Change your eating and exercising habits. You can do this. Do not try to change everything at once, unless you are just one of those rare individuals that can do that.

Beauty care starts with our diet. Diet does not mean just losing weight. Diet means the food you put in your daily eating habits.

1)A rule of thumb for eating habits are…don’t eat more calories than you consume. Don’t go one single day without doing something extra and physical for at least 30 minutes per day. This can be three ten minute walks. Or 30 minutes of vigorous aerobics, or 12 minutes of weight lifting and 18 minutes of walking.

2) Water, you need water. Try to add at least 4 more glasses of water to your daily diet. The rule of thumb for water is 8 glasses per day; and one extra for every ten pounds overweight you are.

3) Fats, you need to know about fats. There are different kinds of fats. Some fats are better for you than others. A rule of thumb on fats is, stay away from hydrogenated fats. These are fats that solidify. They are in store bought cakes, cookies, crackers, chips and even in bran muffins. Read the labels.

Choose fats that are polyunsaturated or fats such as olive oil. And, eat some fish to get some omega-3 fats. Carbohydrates – Are your immediate fuel source. An average is about 55 percent of your diet in carbohydrates. So, a rule of thumb is, figure your protein grams, get around 25% fat per day, and the rest would be in carbohydrates. The heavier you are, the more protein you need the less carbohydrates you will need.

Fats – try not to exceed more than 25 percent fat in your daily diet. 30 is fine, too. That does not mean you can’t have a junk food fast food hamburger… it just means that if you do eat that 55 percent fat burger that you are going to have to cut down on other fat filled foods for the rest of the day to balance it out.

4) Fiber – work up to getting 25 grams of Fiber per day

5) Protein – averages about 20 percent. Divide weight by 2.2 and multiply that by .8 to get the kilograms. For men it is averages as one gram per each kilogram of weight. So, a man would divide their weight in pounds 2.2 then multiply that by .10

6) Make exchanges gradually. Suppose you drink whole milk…work down to 2 percent. Maybe replacing two of your cups per day until you can completely change over. If you are on two percent milk, work down to 1 percent.

New Apple Ingredient Discovery Keeps Muscles Strong!
by: Michael Clonts

Natural Component of Apple Peels Found To Help Prevent Muscle WeakeningIn search of an effective method to prevent muscle wasting that comes with illness and aging, researchers have located a natural compound that is very promising. The findings reported in the June issue of Cell Metabolism (a Cell Press publication), identify a natural component of apple peels known as Ursolic Acid as a promising newnutritional therapy for the widespread and debilitating condition that affects nearly everyone at one time or another.”Muscle wasting is a frequent companion of illness and aging,” explained researchers from The University of Iowa, Iowa City. “It prolongs hospitalization, delays recoveries and in some cases prevents people going back home. It isn’t well understood and there is no medicine for it.”The research team first looked at what happens to gene activity in muscles under conditions that promote weakening. Those studies turned up 63 genes that change in response to fasting in both people and mice and another 29 that shift their expression in the muscles of both people who are fasting and those with spinal cord injury. Comparison of those gene expression signatures to the signatures of cells treated with more than 1300 bio-active small molecules led them to ursolic acid as a compound with effects that might counteract those of atrophy.”Ursolic Acid is an interesting natural compound,” they said. “It’s part of a normal diet as a component of apple peels. They always say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away…”The researchers next gave Ursolic Acid to fasted laboratory subjects. Those experiments showed that ursolic acid could protect against muscle weakening as predicted. When ursolic acid was added to the food of normal subjects for a period of weeks, their muscles grew. Those effects were traced back to enhanced insulin signaling in muscle and to corrections in the gene signatures linked to atrophy.

The subjects given ursolic acid also became leaner and had lower blood levels of glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides. The findings therefore suggest that ursolic acid may be responsible for some of the overall benefits of healthy eating.

“We know if you eat a balanced diet like mom told us to eat you get this material,” the researchers explained “People who eat junk food don’t get this.”

It is not yet clear whether the findings will translate to human patients, but the goal now is to “figure out if this can help people.” If so, they don’t yet know whether Ursolic Acid at levels that might be consumed as part of a normal diet might or might not be enough.

Great Tips for Time Management

Oct 6, 2014 0

time management

Time management is hard!  I know, I still have to make a conscious decision everyday to be sure I am using my time wisely. First thing in the morning is not bad.  I spend the first couple of hours reading my bible and in prayer.  But afterwards, when I should be working, my mind and body wants to sit in front of the television and watch I Love Lucy.

This wouldn’t be problem except that my most productive hours are in the morning.   So I can’t waste time watching television, surfing the internet, or checking emails.  I know that after 2pm my body and mind start winding down and nothing is getting done.  This may not be your particular situation.  You may be at your best in the afternoon.  Or maybe you want and are trying to carve out time for yourself and/or your family.  Whatever the particular situation, we know we need to take control of our time.  Below are some tips to help you manage time stealers:

1) Turn off the television.  With TiVo, internet, etc.,  there is no excuse for not being able to watch your favorite television shows at a later time.  You may have to re-train your body and emotions if they are used to watching television at a certain time during the day.  Yes, there may be withdrawal but you will overcome.

2) Prioritize.  Block off time in your day to do what is most important.  Make this uninterrupted time.  Turn off the phone.  If necessary, let family and friends know that this time is for your family, when you are working, or your quiet time.

3) Limit your cell phone and computer use.  These are the true time stealers.  I know that there are emails and alerts you must check, but if you are checking these several times within the hour, that is too much of your time that you could be using for more important things.  Prioritize your calls and check you emails twice a day, preferably around lunch and after your workday.

Time is the one thing we cannot get back. Remember:Time = life; therefore, waste your time and waste of your life, or master your time and master your life.” ~Alan Lakein.

Iowa couple’s 150% tip goes viral

Sep 29, 2014 0

By Heather Long @byHeatherLong

NEW YORK (CNNMoney)
Makenzie and Steven Schultz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa hired a babysitter Saturday night and headed to a new restaurant in town to celebrate their wedding anniversary.
What happened next caught the attention of the world.

Their dining experience “sucked,” Makenzie later wrote in a Facebook post that has gone viral with over a million “likes” and 150,000 shares. It “took 20 minutes to get water, 40 minutes for an appetizer and over an hour for an entree.”

Makenzie told CNNMoney that one couple actually walked out of the restaurant and another ran up to the hostess booth to warn a friend not to eat there.

The scene was akin to something out of a bad reality TV show where the diners are duped.

But the Schultzes looked around and realized something: There was only one waiter serving 12 tables, and he was doubling as the bartender too.

“It was easy for us to say, ‘Oh my goodness it’s taking so long. I can’t believe it,'” Makenzie said. “But I just flipped that and said look, he’s working so hard. He’s doing all that he can. He just has all these tables.”

In the end, they left a $100 tip for the server on a bill of $66.65. Makenzie wrote on the bill, “We’ve both been in your shoes. Paying it forward.”

Makenzie and Steven met when they were both waiters at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. in the Mall of America in Minnesota.

They know that sometimes the kitchen messes up or someone calls in sick and it’s not the waiter’s fault, but guests still blame the server, often leaving horrible tips.

“Steven and I agreed it would feel good to make this guy’s night when he would probably be getting minimal to no tips due to slow service,” she wrote in the Facebook post that displayed the bill (but omitted the name of the restaurant).

The tip worked out to 150%, a heck of a lot bigger than the usual 15% to 20% most Americans leave. CNNMoney confirmed the huge tip with the restaurant, which said they planned to add more waiters and that someone had called in sick Saturday and they couldn’t find a replacement.

“I’m just sharing this as a friendly reminder to think of the entire situation before you judge,” the Facebook post concluded. “And always always always remember where you came from.”

The Schultz family was astonished by how much attention the post received. They have heard from hundreds of people through Facebook, most complimenting them or sharing similarly inspiring stories.

As of Monday morning, they had not heard anything more from the server or the restaurant. They left without saying anything to the waiter because he was busy and they wanted it to be a surprise.

“I hope people just show more compassion for everybody,” Makenzie said. “If you can give little or give big, I think everybody’s world would be a little kinder, gentler and nicer.”

gnn grateful

Are you grateful for the meal you just ate?  How did you show your appreciation? Well at Mary’s Gourmet Diner (MGD), she observes customers that show appreciation for their meal.  This sounds like a quick and simple task, but believe or not everyone does not do it. This may be the reason MGD gives a gift for showing you are grateful for the food you are about to receive.

On MGD twitter page, she gives a brief explanation for her restaurants GIFT.  “There’s a lot of craziness going on in regard to the 15% discount. I will not respond to all the posts. I will say that it is not a ‘policy.’  It’s a gift we give at random to customers who take a moment before their meal. This could be prayer or just a moment to breathe & push the busyness of the world away. Who you talk to or meditate on etc. is your business. I have lived in a 3rd world country, there are people starving.

We live in a country with an abundance of beautiful food. I NEVER take that for granted. It warms my heart to see people with an attitude of gratitude. Prayer, meditation or just breathing while being grateful opens the heart chakra.  It’s good for everyone!!! Thanks to my local community for your support…you know who I am.  As for all the people posting negative coents about me and my restaurant who have never met me or been to the restaurant, thanks for sharing, it’s your right to speak out, just as it is mine. Peace, love & happy eating!!!

GOOD4YOU: 5 Healthy Ways To Get Over a Break-Up

Aug 24, 2014 0

 By Connie Alsobrook

Sharing their lives with each other1. Exercise. When you endorphins start pumping through cardio exercise
you stress levels are lowered. Running, bike ride, speed walking, are
all good cardio enhancers.

Sitting in the house not eating, crying to friends, or moving around
is not good for your body. Do the opposite of what you want to do and
you will immediate feel better.

2. Think Of All The Good Things You Have. The loss is anything is painful,
especially when it is someone you once loved and thought you would
spend the rest of you life with.

After the breakup you focus of the negative things instead of all the
positive things in your life, because somehow we feel rejected. We
all have great things in our life, think of those and be grateful. Each
day when you get up think of one thing you are grateful for, and say it
out loud.

3. Give Back. Charity work always feel good, when you are able to do
something for someone else. Once you see you have helped another person
you get that warm fuzzy feeling back. Believe it, helping others does
help you.

4. Eat Your Favorite Food. Just the mere thought of our favorite food
sometimes makes us feel better. There are “feel good” foods that could be
your favorite as well. Here are a few of those: Grapefruit, blueberries
lettuce, and cranberries So go ahead and indulge on whatever it is you love (do not over do it).

5. Candles. Try not to think of candles for only romance. Candles are
used for many purposes, including relaxation. Light a few scent candles,
for aroma therapy and feel the calmness come over you.

GOOD4YOU: Try Classical Music

Aug 24, 2014 0

There are many positive effects of classical music and whether you want to become a professional musician or not, studying it can really help you live a better life. Benefits of listening and playing classical music have been known for a long time, but you don’t have to be rich anymore to study it. With easily available information on the internet, affordable music instruments and so many music teachers today who don’t charge much for lessons, most people can afford it. It also doesn’t matter how old you are because you are never too old to start and most classical musicians will tell you that.

Do you know that classical music can really make you smarter? That is not just some people’s opinion. With advancements in medical technology, it has been proven that an average classical musician uses both halves of the brain much more frequently then an average person. Classical musicians are trained to think fast and to do many different things at the same time without getting confused. That is the reason why a brain of a classical musician is much more active then a brain of an average person and it is also a reason why classical musicians are much less likely to ever get Alzheimer’s disease than the rest of population. Classical music can keep your mind sharp no matter how old you are and it wouldn’t be odd to find a ninety year old classical musician who has much better memory than an average twenty year old. Also, just like classical music can prevent Alzheimer’s disease it can help treat it too. Being able to think fast at an old age is something that you just can’t put a price to and it can help you live a much better life when you get old.
