Stephen Curry Thinking Of Others

Apr 25, 2016

Not only does Stephen Curry II play basketball like a boss, the Golden State Warriors point guard likes to use his celebrity to give people continents away a better shot at longevity. Were it not for him, a good number of African children and their families would contact malaria. Malaria; which comes with chills, fever and sweating in cycles; often has death riding on its coat tails. It comes from the bite of infected female mosquitoes.
In many cases, children die from this preventable disease. Curry had advocated for insecticide-treated bed nets, and made his own contributions toward that end. Such nets can keep infected mosquitoes out of beds and other sleeping areas.
Along with The United Nations Foundation, Rick Reilley founded the Nothing But Nets program. This initiative is the globe’s largest grassroots campaign in place to prevent mosquito-borne malaria from spreading in Africa. Statistics show that in Africa one child a minute succumbs to the disease. MVP Curry, sometimes referred to as Stephen, discovered that a mere $10 could substantially decrease the likelihood that someone under a net’s protection would be bitten by mosquitoes. In fact, Stephen has been a champion for this cause since he was a college student.

The official “Nothing But Net” website indicates that Curry birthed the idea of a three for three challenge; where he committed to send three bed nets for every three point shot he completed during the 2012 and 2013 season. The season was trumpeted as a banner year for him, as he made a record with 272 shots. This translated to 816 bed nets, or 816 families that received this protection.
He has not slowed down in his commitment to fuel the campaign to save lives and to eradicate malaria off the face of this earth.

World Malaria Day, which occurs on April 25th, is a day when a more intensified and collective focus is given toward the quest of raising donations of nets, money, and awareness of this-waving measure. On this day, there is a million nets pledge. Curry is active in that day of focus.
Image result for world malaria day
All throughout the year there is also the concerted effort to gather more of what’s referred to as “bzzzkill” participants. These are people who seek to influence their friends and family members to donate nets to the cause. In addition, they seek to have more voices lifted to Capital Hill to express concerns that everything be done to get nets into the African communities that desperately need nets and that those needing the inexpensive aid can’t wait. If it’s a positive thing, and it’s attached to providing nets for African families in mosquito-laden areas in Africa, Curry’s made sure he stays attached and active.

3 Things You Can Do:

1. Send a Net
They have a simple, proven solution to a deadly problem in Africa. For a family, a net can mean the difference between life and death. For only $10 dollars, you can protect a family and save a life.
2. Join Team Bzzzkill
Increase your impact by rallying your friends, family, and neighbors to send nets. You can use your talents to raise money by starting a fundraiser.
3. Advocate for Nets
Make sure your member of congress knows that the fight to end malaria is a priority for you. Raise awareness about the cause and make your voice heard on Capitol Hill.

3 Things You Didn’t Know About The 2015 Oscars

Feb 26, 2015 0

This year’s Oscar Award show was definitely the pinnacle of many water cooler conversations. Whether you vote for the winners of Best Actor and Actress or share the heartbreak over your pick for Best Picture, Birdman, versus American Sniper or Selma, there are several facts about the Oscar Awards’ sponsor, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, that little of its 36 Million viewers are aware. We, at the Good News Notebook, would like to share a few interesting facts that all can agree are winners!

1. Don’t for the SCIENCE of Motion Pictures in its name.

Most know the foundation by the nomenclature, “The Academy.” Beside the Oscars, the “Academy” also honors key industry players with the Sci-Tech Award annually. The Academy’s Scientific and Technical Awards honor the men, women and companies whose discoveries and innovations have contributed in significant and lasting ways to motion pictures. Honorees are celebrated at a formal dinner held two weeks prior to the Oscar ceremony. The Sci-Tech Awards presentation has become a highlight of the Academy Awards season.

According to their website, First presented at the 4th Academy Awards ceremony in November 1931, Scientific & Technical Awards are conferred in recognition of original developments that result in significant improvements in motion picture production and exhibition. Scientific and technical achievement is awarded on three levels: Technical Achievement Award (certificate), Scientific and Engineering Award (bronze tablet) and Academy Award of Merit (Oscar statuette).

2. The Academy offers Grant Opportunities.

In 2013, the “Academy” distributed $325,000 to 27 film-related nonprofit organizations through its Education Grants Program. The Educational Grants Program provides support to institutions and other nonprofit organizations that help aspiring filmmakers gain the skills and knowledge they need to make theatrical motion pictures.

Moreover, for all of our Film Festival fans, the “Academy’s” Film Festival Grants program has awarded over $5.7 million to film festivals since 1999. Grants totaling $450,000 were granted to 30 U.S. film festivals in 2011. While the grants are awarded for a variety of programs, film festivals are encouraged to submit proposals that make festival events more accessible to the general public, provide greater access to minority and less visible filmmakers, and help strengthen the connection between the filmmaker and the public.

3. The “Academy” operates the world famous Margaret Herrick Library.

Margaret Herrick was the Academy librarian from 1936 to 1943, and served as the Academy’s executive director from 1945 to 1971. It was Herrick who laid the foundation for what is now considered to be one of the world’s finest film-related libraries. And it was Herrick who expanded the Academy’s activities into several key non-Awards areas, negotiated the Academy’s first television broadcast and oversaw the transformation of the annual Oscar ceremony into a major televised event.

The Margaret Herrick Library is a world-renowned, non-circulating reference and research collection devoted to the history and development of the motion picture as an art form and as an industry. Established in 1928, a year after the Academy was founded, the library moved to its current Beverly Hills location in 1991.

Usher Donates 100,000 New Children’s Books

Jan 5, 2015 0

Atlanta native and R&B Mogul, Usher, is known for his on-stage showmanship. But, recently, the GoodNews Notebook was captivated with his tremendous act of charity and service to the community. In conjunction with publisher Scholastic, Usher and the school publication magnate recently announced that a donation of 100,000 usher-scholastic-kids
new children’s books from The Scholastic Possible Fund will be donated to children in need this holiday season through three non-profit organizations that work to improve global literacy: Save the Children,Toys for Tots and Room to Read. The donation was made together with Usher and his New Look Foundation, a nonprofit organization that develops youth from underserved communities into global leaders. Usher recently joined with Scholastic to launch the new “Open a World of Possible” initiative, designed to elevate the importance and joy of reading for all children.

On November 6th 2014, eight-time Grammy Award-winning artist Usher hosted a live classroom webcast, viewed by close to 3 million students and their teachers, where he talked about the ways children can get involved in spreading the joy of reading. For their first call to action, students were asked to learn about three leading non-profit organizations and vote for the organization(s) they’d like to receive a donation of books. Each organization is receiving a portion of the donation from The Scholastic Possible Fund based on the students’ votes.
“We know from research that when children discover a book they love, they are motivated to read more, understand more, and learn more. When that happens, everything is possible,” said Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO, Scholastic. “We applaud all the work that Toys for Tots, Save the Children and Room to Read do to ‘Open a World of Possible’ for children in the U.S. and around the world by giving them wonderful new books and stories to experience, enjoy, and own.”

Would A “Rose” By Any Other Name Smell As Sweet?

Dec 8, 2014 0

By any measure Rose Chase Smith is doing good for the Austin community. Smith founded her organization, R.O.S.E.S. (Reaching Out Supporting Every Sister) to provide a networking and supporting platform for women. The author of “Nothing Like Me,” also established an annual Meet The Author Extravaganza. It was created and designed in an effort to help showcase Texas authors and poets, and give them more exposure. But, most importantly it allows Smith the opportunity to promote reading and writing, enhance her community, and help others. She has demonstrated that providing lift to others is her passion and the foundation upon which R.O.S.E.S was built. Additionally, youth and anyone who aspires to write, publish, or explore any area in this industry benefits from attending.

Meet The Author Extravaganza

The Meet The Author Extravaganza is now about to enter its fourth year. Smith allows every author/vendor to have their books on display and for sale. They sign all books purchased and chat with guests. The event is also arranged to feature an open mic session for authors and poets to introduce themselves and their work.

The organizer reports,“The venue is huge, so it is perfect to house the Literary Event of The Year!”

The event typically lasts five hours, and the authors get to know each other through networking and are able to find out some delicious new ways to market and promote their work. Some authors find editors and other talent that will help them to write better books. While you see them watching each other, it’s not in about jealousy or envy – it’s so that they can learn from one another. Each one seems eager to share how they made certain aspects of writing, publishing or selling their books more optimally successful.

Jessica Matthews attended during the first year and gushed her enthusiasm. “The event was inviting and the authors embraced everyone who attended. It was nice to have an opportunity to ask questions, exchange ideas and get to know the creators of such extraordinary books. Kudos to Rose Smith and R.O.S.E.S!!”

After the second annual event, Jedah Mayberry, author of “The King of Preston Plains Middle,” shared the take-way he experienced. “It provided me with the opportunity to rub elbows with other writers, benefit from their experiences. I also joined an author association during the event, as they had a representative on site.”

Mayberry and others have gone on to showcase their books at book festivals, advance their online presence, host premium book events, do school visits, become guest speakers at various venues and more.

Woe of Writers

One offshoot of the extravaganza was the WOW (Woe of Writers) group formed by Smith after the second year of Meet The Author. This enabled writers who she knew to come together in a restaurant setting and discuss their goals, milestones and challenges. In this more relaxed environment, many authors and writers were able to better articulate their dreams and find inspiration to go forward with their various book, screen and other projects.

Annual School Supply Drive/Giveaway

Another feather in her cap is her annual school supply drive. Several years ago, she and her husband took money out of their own pocket and bought school supplies to give to underprivileged children. Since then, several stores and individuals have donated money and supplies to help increase the reach of this initiative. Smith has even set up at places like Wal-Mart to sell baked goods and increase the coffers so that more children can get school supplies.

The community has come to count on Smith. For females in the community, she is a top-of-mind source. Many school children look hopefully in her direction so that they have the supplies they need before school starts. Authors and their readers prepare to meet yearly and enjoy the extravaganza, and even girls without prom dresses knows about her collection of donated dresses from which they can select a glam dress to wear to their prom. Scores of Austinites know about the good Smith does in her community. They often declare, “And she is expecting nothing in return for doing it.”

Author Ricky Sanderson/Relationships and Religion

Dec 1, 2014 0

Ordained Minister Ricky Sanderson knows first-hand how people’s lives can beset with troubles in the relationship arena. The divorced father of three reaches others through the skillful blend of his counseling services, his training ministry and his literary projects. He artfully uses his multipronged platform to reach, aid and heal. Sanderson is the author of two books with another one in the works. With shortened titles that belie the weight of the contents, the books are almost a branding strategy. Hurting people have been finding solace and insight through his books since the debut of “H&H” Him to Her: Her to Him in 2011.

“H&H” stands for Him to Her: Her to Him and explores the inside track of relationships and how they relate to the word of God. In 2014 R&R (which stands for Relationships and Religion) was released. This volume is a collection of true short stories from counseling clients whose relationships were rescued then they turned to God. They agreed to having their true stories shared, and Sanderson said drama, thriller qualities and suspense are included because they are the true stock of life.

Since he was so familiar with hurting people who needed more than platitudes, he took classes that enabled him to understand how to reach people and show them how to use the bible to transform their relationships and lives. His ministry targets everyone in need of restoration. He said his inspiration for his work comes from God and he detailed the type of people his work assists. “It’s a Ministry. An outreach ministry that caters to those not in church or distant from a preacher.”

He finds a great deal of his time occupied with giving back through ministry to couples and by offering trainings sessions to young men and women. Sanderson is an active member of the Fellowship of Churches of New Bedford Massachusetts and Youth Adviser for the Association of Rhode Island/Massachusetts.

Sanderson offered uplifting inspiration to others with a book or publishing project churning around on the inside. “If they have a thought or idea that they want to put on paper, then by all means do so. Everybody has a story to tell.” He mentioned that people like to read about other people’s lives. He offered one more reason why someone with a book idea should act swiftly to get the book into the public’s hands. “It may inspire or touch someone.”

The reason people should consider him over his competitors were distilled in his words, “Because I’m giving knowledge of what God has in store to those who come to Him.”

Sanderson said his life and work is inspired by the late Bishop J.O. Patterson, who gave him his first job, but he disclosed that if he could meet anyone alive today he would choose business magnate/philanthropist Bill Gates.

He said everyone should be aware that God is not dead and that no matter what they are going through; God has an answer for them.

To view his latest literary work visit, RSander1.com. He can be reached by email at Ricky.sanderson@gmail.com. Any readers who purchase R&R and writes him at the address in the back of the book will get an autographed copy of H&H free.
