Free Hair Cuts For Reading

Apr 29, 2016

By Laura Duncanson
Being a barber is about taking care of people and this barber in Iowa takes this quote to a whole other level. The small town of Dubuque, Iowa has been receiving a lot of media attention recently as local barber Courtney Holmes has given a whole new meaning to getting a haircut. He has been giving haircuts to local kids in exchange for them reading him a book.

Courtney Holmes is a 45 year old barber who recently moved from Chicago with his wife Sarah and two sons Jackson and Josiah. Upon moving to Dubuque, he joined the Black Man Coalition, which is a nonprofit organization that helps inner city African American youths prepare for college, jobs and life by giving them a sense of empowerment. Because of his busy schedule, he said he was not able to be as active in the group as he would have liked but told the coordinator of the group if there was anything he could do such as give out free haircuts please let him know. And who would have thought that tiny suggestion would have caused such a tremendous effect.

At the local Annual Back to School Bash where the Dubuque Black Men Coalition was volunteering, they had Mr. Holmes set up between 12 and 4 to give haircuts to the local kids in exchange for reading books. He told The Good News Notebook that he was so surprised about the response of the event; children from kindergarten all the way up to the middle school, read books from a nearby stall as well as the few he brought from home which he would read nightly to his own sons. He gave out 10-15 haircuts during that 4 hour period and had to give out his business card to the other children eagerly waiting to take him up on this offer. “The kids were so excited and had a lot of energy…everyone was motivating and encouraging each other to read…if any of the kids started having difficulty reading, I’d help them out as well” was one of the few things that excited Mr. Holmes about the whole experience.

Since the event there have been a lot of people donating books, backpacks and shirts to the movement. The owner of the salon he works at, Amanda Troutman, has also joined in by approving haircuts for reading in house on a monthly basis. He hopes his act is an encouragement to others and goes to nearby cities and countries at large. In the school system, there are kids that read below their grade level and this could be a way to help tackle this issue. He sais that it’s important to help the kids and help the parents.

He gives glory to God and is humbled just to be a willing servant to do His work. He wants our GNN readers to know whatever you do, do it from your heart. Just one kind gesture can have such a big response. His experience with this event personally, ‘felt like throwing a pebble in the pond to cause a big ripple.’ Thank you Mr. Holmes for being that pebble and we look forward to others taking the initiative as well.

Stephen Curry Thinking Of Others

Apr 25, 2016

Not only does Stephen Curry II play basketball like a boss, the Golden State Warriors point guard likes to use his celebrity to give people continents away a better shot at longevity. Were it not for him, a good number of African children and their families would contact malaria. Malaria; which comes with chills, fever and sweating in cycles; often has death riding on its coat tails. It comes from the bite of infected female mosquitoes.
In many cases, children die from this preventable disease. Curry had advocated for insecticide-treated bed nets, and made his own contributions toward that end. Such nets can keep infected mosquitoes out of beds and other sleeping areas.
Along with The United Nations Foundation, Rick Reilley founded the Nothing But Nets program. This initiative is the globe’s largest grassroots campaign in place to prevent mosquito-borne malaria from spreading in Africa. Statistics show that in Africa one child a minute succumbs to the disease. MVP Curry, sometimes referred to as Stephen, discovered that a mere $10 could substantially decrease the likelihood that someone under a net’s protection would be bitten by mosquitoes. In fact, Stephen has been a champion for this cause since he was a college student.

The official “Nothing But Net” website indicates that Curry birthed the idea of a three for three challenge; where he committed to send three bed nets for every three point shot he completed during the 2012 and 2013 season. The season was trumpeted as a banner year for him, as he made a record with 272 shots. This translated to 816 bed nets, or 816 families that received this protection.
He has not slowed down in his commitment to fuel the campaign to save lives and to eradicate malaria off the face of this earth.

World Malaria Day, which occurs on April 25th, is a day when a more intensified and collective focus is given toward the quest of raising donations of nets, money, and awareness of this-waving measure. On this day, there is a million nets pledge. Curry is active in that day of focus.
Image result for world malaria day
All throughout the year there is also the concerted effort to gather more of what’s referred to as “bzzzkill” participants. These are people who seek to influence their friends and family members to donate nets to the cause. In addition, they seek to have more voices lifted to Capital Hill to express concerns that everything be done to get nets into the African communities that desperately need nets and that those needing the inexpensive aid can’t wait. If it’s a positive thing, and it’s attached to providing nets for African families in mosquito-laden areas in Africa, Curry’s made sure he stays attached and active.

3 Things You Can Do:

1. Send a Net
They have a simple, proven solution to a deadly problem in Africa. For a family, a net can mean the difference between life and death. For only $10 dollars, you can protect a family and save a life.
2. Join Team Bzzzkill
Increase your impact by rallying your friends, family, and neighbors to send nets. You can use your talents to raise money by starting a fundraiser.
3. Advocate for Nets
Make sure your member of congress knows that the fight to end malaria is a priority for you. Raise awareness about the cause and make your voice heard on Capitol Hill.

10 Foods Business People Eat To Boost Their Energy

Mar 31, 2016

‘What you eat is what you are’ – a common saying that is frankly quite true. The body and every single cell in it are affected positively or negatively by everything we feed them with. If you often feel like your fatigue is really on the down-side and you need to boost up your energy quick, maybe you should take a look at the ten most common foods eaten by business people, those who need energy boosters the most.

  1. Chicken Breasts. The main trigger for boosting your energy here is the packed up portion of proteins, a valuable source of energy. The use of the proteins will be more effective if the meat is grilled and not fried.chickenbreast
  2. Egg yolk,  something full of proteins and usually consumed for breakfast – Many people fear to eat the yolk, but more and more studies show that the key beneficial ingredient of the egg is the yolk,  so just go for it.egg-yolk
  3. Bananas, are a quick and compact fruit that you can grab on the run and give you a great boost of energy.  Keep them in your office for your assistant and employees, to make sure their energy stays up as well.BANANA-GOODNESS

    4. Greek Yogurt
contains a double portion of proteins in comparison to the normal yogurt. Still there are Greek Yogurts that have a lot of sugar and fructose in them and should be avoided. The plain ones are the best and go really good with a spoon of jam.bowl and spoon with joghurt
  4. Almonds will support you throughout the hunger cravings and pack you up with beneficial fats that will reduce the risk of a possible heart attack. Besides a handful of almonds, you can consume almond milk or almond butter with almost the same positive effect on your energy as the nut itself.almonds
  5. Steel-cut-oatmeal also called pinhead oats or coarse oatmeal is the one oatmeal that doesn’t have preservers and unneeded sugars in it that can ruin your metabolism and leave you tired.steal cut oatmeal
  6. Kale is a great green food that will definitely boost up your energy. Of course, every other green vegetable will have a positive impact on your health and energy, but Kale is the top energy booster. You can get creative and use it in many different ways, from smoothies to burgers.

  7. Blueberries are not only tasty but offer a great deal of energy as well. Meanwhile, blueberries work in improving your memory, lowering your blood pressure and carry antioxidant characteristics.blueberries
  8. Garlic not for a business person right, wrong. Eat some at least four times a week and be sure to chase it with fresh lemon water to rid the smell.   Garlic is a great antioxidant and helps to prevent and reduce the severity of common illnesses like the flu and common cold.Garlic-bulbs
  9. Dark chocolate with 70% of cocoa or more is another top energy booster and has capabilities greater than blueberries or nuts. When you feel really exhausted, dare to have a mix of dark chocolate, nuts and berries and get ready for an energy blast-off.chocolate

How To Stop Change From Occurring in Your World

Mar 24, 2016

Shane White

Someone recently told me they are sick of the self-help gurus that perpetuate the need to grow, change, and constantly evolve into a higher version of themselves. Why do THEY always have to be the one to do the changing and adapting? Why can’t their ex’s do some soul-searching and examine their own destructive patterns?

If this resonates with you, I have good news. To close the books on the pressure for personal growth, there are two basic attitudes to consider.

How you deal with your attitude regarding DEMAND and DESIRE will shift your trajectory dramatically.

A attitude of demandingness can be likened to that of a requirement. You require a certain standard of behavior of others. When you cultivate an attitude of demandingness towards others, you can stop the need for growth and change within yourself by requiring (demanding) others to be responsible for your personal happiness and well-being. In doing so, this removes your own empowerment and instead empowers others to be responsible for your personal growth and fulfillment. A great example is, “If you weren’t so mean to me, I would be a much happier person.” When you develop the art of blaming others, you empower them to bear the responsibility for your inner happiness and lack of change. Consequently, your reason for not trying and giving up has now been legitimized. By not taking control and responsibility of your feelings, and allowing outside forces to control how you feel will give you a free pass to behave less than stellar.
In contrast, an attitude of desire can be likened to that of a request. You request a certain standard of behavior of yourself. When you cultivate an attitude of request towards yourself, you can stop the need for growth and change within yourself by merely desiring things be different. The way you present this to the world is, “I hope things will get better,” or “I wish things would be different.” This way you come off with all the good intentions without really having to do anything about it. And, the bonus is, that you get lots of sympathy and attention. The people around you say things like, “Oh that poor gal, she has such a good heart and has a desire for everything to be alright.” You get to portray yourself as the helpless victim and all the enablers will come out of the woodwork to do things for you.

I will warn you, some of the radicals will reverse the order and cultivate an attitude of demandingness and require more of themselves and who they are at a core level. On this flip side, they will cultivate an attitude of desire when it comes to the behavior of others. They desire or wish their ex or others would behave better, but they take on the mindset that they can’t control others; only themselves. They make a conscious choice to be happy and don’t allow the crazy behavior of others, whom they can’t control, to control their own behavior.
So stay away from these folks if you don’t want to grow, change and evolve into the best version of yourself. Or do you?

Trade School vs College

Mar 17, 2016

Boris Gjerovski
University Sts. Cyril and Methodius in Skopje, Republic of Macedonia

The time we live in has changed measurably and the old models of education lack some ingenuity to fit the new market rules. The fact is that whenever we want to invest in our lives while being a part of the educational system, our enrollment in it for the purpose grabbing the best diploma/degree which will ‘guarantee’ better future is a rule we must follow. But the market has changed and the opportunities for learning have twisted significantly. Now college is still a great way to help a person acquire the right skills for being a good professional in certain fields, but is it really necessary in order to succeed in life? Is it really the best and only way to become good at something, or better alternatives which save a lot of time and money are equally good, or even better? Let’s analyze the average costs of education, length of studies and possible benefits between trade schools (starting trend in the 90’s) and average colleges in order to see things as they really are.

College
Students decide to go to college because of the increase of possible income, which is around $17,000 bigger with a college diploma, rather than working with a high school diploma on a yearly basis. Most of the colleges have a four year program for getting bachelor degree in which the person looses approximately $ 30,000, which is considered the average opportunity costs for being a college student instead of a worker. Trade Schools last only two years, so the initial pros of such in money based value is $60,000 plus. The comparison of length looks something like this, but only theoretically. The Institute of Education of USA published a survey saying that from all of the attendants at college, only 60% get their diploma. According to US News, 64% of graduates need more than 4 years to finish college, which adds an astonishing average of $70,000 of student expenses yearly, possible $100,000 considering the opportunity costs. Great deals of expenses follow later in life because of the student loans, and graduates end up being stuck with $50,000-$100,000 of debt after the studies are completed. Well at least the graduates will have a brighter future in their profession right? – Supposedly, but it is not so certain anymore. The unemployment and underemployment rates for college graduates have doubled since 2007, leaving a lot of students work-less and unable to pay their student loans.

Trade School
Trade schools come as a great alternative and opportunity for merely secure future. First of the benefits, as I mentioned before, are the spared two years (at least) of student expenses. Since the average yearly expenses of college students come up to $70,000, trade school students save $140,000 because of the shorter course of studies. And what you get with the diploma? A college graduate is expected to have $47,000 annual income, $11,200 more than students coming from trade schools, says the National Center for Educational Statistics. Since the college graduates spend $140,000 more, the students from trade schools have a 12 year advantage until balancing earnings vs. expenses with college graduates. The average student debt load for trade school graduates is 70% less than college graduates, summing up to $10,000 per student. Another factor of benefit for students who decide to go study in trade schools are the opened job possibilities. Since most of the population working ‘specific’ jobs like mechanics or dentists hygienists is older, the labor market narrows and needs to be filled with more young enthusiasts that are sure to get the job they were taught for. And as long as the competition is low, the incomes of the services of technicians will continue to rise. Sure, four year college degree offers bigger possibilities on longer terms, but nowadays nothing is certain and the conditions and costs of studying change drastically. Whatever a student chooses should go for it until the goal is reached, and be satisfied with nothing less.

5 Steps to Cultivating Genuine Self-Love

Feb 23, 2016

shan photo Create The Life You See When You Close Your Eyes and Dream Most of us desire romantic love and ways in which we can attract it or keep the flames alive with that special someone. Romantic love causes us to light up like a Christmas tree, breathe a little easier, and view the world with more positivity. Yet, in order to love another with authentic unconditional love, we must first love ourselves. We cannot give what we do not have. One of my favorite counselors, Dr. Larry Crabb, used to say that most couples are like “two fleas and no dog.” Each partner enters the relationship, not to give, but to suck the life’s blood out of each other in order to fill themselves up. We tend to approach relationships from a deficiency instead of approaching the relationship to give and contribute from a position of abundance.
To have an abundance of love to give, we have to fill ourselves up first. I recently worked with a client on this same issue and developed a strategy that was very effective. I named it the “Tabula Rasa Strategy.”
Tabula Rasa in Latin means “blank slate.” Many mental health professionals claim that when we are born, we are born with a blank slate. As we develop as human beings, those who have the most influence on us write on the slate of our souls. It could be a parent, family member, or teacher.
In this exercise with my client, the person who had the most influence on her was her father. When we discussed what he wrote on the slate of her soul, words like “unworthy, insignificant, unimportant, and invisible” came to her mind. Although this greatly affects our belief system about who we are, and what we are capable of, this is not uncommon.

So, here’s the strategy or directive I gave her and you could use for yourself:
1. Write down on a piece of paper the words, feelings, or impressions of what was written on your tabula rasa – your blank slate.
2. Review the list and determine which are objectively true. Then take a red pen or marker and cross out that which is false.
3. Take the piece of paper, crumble it up, and burn it. (Use a fire-safe receptacle like a fireplace, fire pit, or kitchen sink.)
4. Take a new piece of paper and write down what is true about the genuine you. My client wrote things like, “vibrant, conscious, worthy, wanted, loved, and fully expressed.”
5. Review your list every day for 21 days, which creates a habit and reinforces what you really believe about yourself. (This will take less than 30 seconds.)
In implementing this strategy, you will begin to eliminate old, limiting beliefs about yourself and reinforce new, empowering beliefs about yourself that build a foundation of self-love that will enable you to give authentic love to another. The kind of love that contributes to a relationship instead of contaminates. Aren’t you and your partner, or future partner, worth it?

Positive Thinking & Your Health

Dec 21, 2015

by Luke Edward Hays

The phrase positive thinking does come across as feel good language. Through research it has been revealed that positive thinking is more than just being happy or displaying an upbeat attitude that can create real value in someone’s life. Barbara Fredrickson, a positive psychology researcher at the University of North Carolina, did an experiment to research the different emotional reactions of different groups of people to see how they would respond.

Staying Positive When You’re Around Toxic People

“Negative emotions involve more thinking and therefore get processed more thoroughly than positive ones,” sociologist and former Stanford professor Clifford Nass wrote in The New York Times. “Almost everyone remembers negative things more strongly and …

Positive emotions broaden an individual’s momentary thought-action range; these include: joy, which sparks the urge to savor and integrate, and love which sparks a recurring cycle of each of these urges within safe close relationships. The second key proposition concerns the consequences of these broadened mindsets. Positive emotions promote discovery of creative actions, ideas and social bonds that in turn builds into that individual’s personal resources. These resources range from physical and intellectual, to social and psychological.
Barbara Fredrickson conducted an experiment where she divided research subjects into five groups. Each group was then show different film clips that created different emotions.

  • The first group saw images that created joy.
  • The second group saw images that created feelings of contentment.
  • Group three was the control group, they where shown images that where neutral and had no significant impact on their emotions.
  • The fourth group saw images that created feelings of fear and group five saw images that created feelings of anger. Afterward, participants where asked to imagine themselves in a situation where similar feelings would arise and then write down what they would do.
  • The final two groups where shown clips that created negative emotions.

Todd Frazier type of player who leaves positive impressions everywhere

Glen Gardner has watched Todd Frazier’s rise from a Little League World Series champion to a two-time Reds All-Star to the White Sox’s new great hope at third base. The longtime Rutgers assistant coach, who recruited New Jersey native Frazier and his …

By the end of the experiment, there were drastically different results. Participants, who saw images of fear and anger, wrote down the fewest responses. The participants who where shown images of joy and containment, wrote down a drastically higher number of actions they would take. These specific results came out even higher when compared to the neutral group.
Barbara Fredrickson refers to the benefits of positive emotions as “The Broaden and Build Theory.” This theory describes the form and functions of a subset of positive emotions. These emotions include: joy, interest, contentment and love. The experienced positive emotions broaden your sense of possibilities and open your mind. In turn this allows you to build new skills and resources that can provide value in other areas in life.

Increasing positive thinking can be accomplished by three different methods. These methods do not only increase your positive thinking, but also results in positive effects on one’s health.

First, take time to write. A study from the Journal of Research in Personality examined 90 undergraduate students. The students where split into two groups. Group one wrote about an intensively positive experience each day for three consecutive days. Group two wrote about a control topic. Following three months of the experiment, the students who wrote about the positive experiences had better mood levels, experienced fewer illnesses and had fewer health center visits.
The second is meditation. Barbara Fredrickson and her colleagues found people who meditated also built valuable long-term skills. It was also revealed that people who meditate daily display more positive emotions than those who do not.
The third may come as a surprise, play. It is important to schedule time to play in your life. It is easy to get caught up in our daily schedule that we can forget to set sometime aside and step back to enjoy a slice of life. Take an opportunity to block out an hour on your calendar or write a reminder to make time for yourself.

Appreciating real value in life begins by thinking positively. The value created helps to build strength that will last throughout your lifetime. When experiencing positive emotions like joy, contentment, and love you will see more life possibilities. They may be writing, music, meditation, or anything else that provides more than just a momentary decrease in stress. Once this step is accomplished, our brains will do the work. We need to set time aside to play and seek adventure on a regular basis.
