The Art of Tipping

Mar 20, 2015 0

Time Is Money 1

Sometimes, it feels good to leave a great tip. Perhaps, you let your awesome waitress know that she did a great job or perhaps you choose to leave a huge anonymous tip for your attentive waiter. No matter, we, at GoodNews Notebook, hope you left a good tip. Is there a science or an Art to Tipping properly. We would like to think so.

Please Mind To Tipping

A social psychologist Deborah Serani of Long Island, New York, reported, “People with cash to burn see a “pay it forward” case on the news and realize they can also help.”

“There is a social contagion factor to this generous kind of behavior, but I think it goes way deeper than that,” Serani said. “On an evolutionary level, generosity has been a key to the survival of the species. What this does is it allows those who are struggling to have some success and as a result we are all better for it.”

Huge tips are also sometimes seen as easy charity and a “quick and powerful way to give,” Serani said.

Random acts of kindness, like paying for the car behind you in a fast food drive-thru line, are common after tragedies, she added.

“There is such struggle and tragedy in our days – I just saw another shooting happen. What this does is give people the ability to do something of impact,” Serani said. “From tragedy comes urges to be generous and helpful.”

And the good feeling works both ways, as both parties experience a “high return.”

In other words, the person leaving a huge tip feels just as good as the person who receives it, Serani said.

Many real-life Peter Pans, like the man behind Hidden Cash and the big tipper who stamped “Tips for Jesus” on his receipts, chose to remain anonymous.

New Apple Ingredient Discovery Keeps Muscles Strong!

New Apple Ingredient Discovery Keeps Muscles Strong!
by: Michael Clonts

Natural Component of Apple Peels Found To Help Prevent Muscle WeakeningIn search of an effective method to prevent muscle wasting that comes with illness and aging, researchers have located a natural compound that is very promising. The findings reported in the June issue of Cell Metabolism (a Cell Press publication), identify a natural component of apple peels known as Ursolic Acid as a promising newnutritional therapy for the widespread and debilitating condition that affects nearly everyone at one time or another.”Muscle wasting is a frequent companion of illness and aging,” explained researchers from The University of Iowa, Iowa City. “It prolongs hospitalization, delays recoveries and in some cases prevents people going back home. It isn’t well understood and there is no medicine for it.”The research team first looked at what happens to gene activity in muscles under conditions that promote weakening. Those studies turned up 63 genes that change in response to fasting in both people and mice and another 29 that shift their expression in the muscles of both people who are fasting and those with spinal cord injury. Comparison of those gene expression signatures to the signatures of cells treated with more than 1300 bio-active small molecules led them to ursolic acid as a compound with effects that might counteract those of atrophy.”Ursolic Acid is an interesting natural compound,” they said. “It’s part of a normal diet as a component of apple peels. They always say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away…”The researchers next gave Ursolic Acid to fasted laboratory subjects. Those experiments showed that ursolic acid could protect against muscle weakening as predicted. When ursolic acid was added to the food of normal subjects for a period of weeks, their muscles grew. Those effects were traced back to enhanced insulin signaling in muscle and to corrections in the gene signatures linked to atrophy.

The subjects given ursolic acid also became leaner and had lower blood levels of glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides. The findings therefore suggest that ursolic acid may be responsible for some of the overall benefits of healthy eating.

“We know if you eat a balanced diet like mom told us to eat you get this material,” the researchers explained “People who eat junk food don’t get this.”

It is not yet clear whether the findings will translate to human patients, but the goal now is to “figure out if this can help people.” If so, they don’t yet know whether Ursolic Acid at levels that might be consumed as part of a normal diet might or might not be enough.

Great Tips for Time Management

Oct 6, 2014 0

time management

Time management is hard!  I know, I still have to make a conscious decision everyday to be sure I am using my time wisely. First thing in the morning is not bad.  I spend the first couple of hours reading my bible and in prayer.  But afterwards, when I should be working, my mind and body wants to sit in front of the television and watch I Love Lucy.

This wouldn’t be problem except that my most productive hours are in the morning.   So I can’t waste time watching television, surfing the internet, or checking emails.  I know that after 2pm my body and mind start winding down and nothing is getting done.  This may not be your particular situation.  You may be at your best in the afternoon.  Or maybe you want and are trying to carve out time for yourself and/or your family.  Whatever the particular situation, we know we need to take control of our time.  Below are some tips to help you manage time stealers:

1) Turn off the television.  With TiVo, internet, etc.,  there is no excuse for not being able to watch your favorite television shows at a later time.  You may have to re-train your body and emotions if they are used to watching television at a certain time during the day.  Yes, there may be withdrawal but you will overcome.

2) Prioritize.  Block off time in your day to do what is most important.  Make this uninterrupted time.  Turn off the phone.  If necessary, let family and friends know that this time is for your family, when you are working, or your quiet time.

3) Limit your cell phone and computer use.  These are the true time stealers.  I know that there are emails and alerts you must check, but if you are checking these several times within the hour, that is too much of your time that you could be using for more important things.  Prioritize your calls and check you emails twice a day, preferably around lunch and after your workday.

Time is the one thing we cannot get back. Remember:Time = life; therefore, waste your time and waste of your life, or master your time and master your life.” ~Alan Lakein.

Men will buy all tickets as a gift for women that they want to affirm. The event will focus less on Breast Cancer as a whole and more on Honoring and affirming our women.
Throughout history our women have shouldered the burden as backbone of our communities, they often carry so much pain to keep their loved ones from worry. Men for the most part have been silent in their struggle; we support them in non-verbal ways, but they need to hear from us, they need us to open up about how we feel about them.
This event will serve as a formal acknowledgement to all of them, our Mothers , Grandmothers, Aunts, Sisters and friends that we are here, we see their sacrifice and we Love them.

“IN HER NAME” is an Affirmation Event produced strictly by Men in Honor of Women in the Fight against Breast Cancer. It will take place Sunday October 12th 4-6p.m at Bob Harrison Senior Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

GA Officer Receives Life-Saving Kidney from a Stranger

Sep 29, 2014 0

By Katie Leslie

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

A Georgia police officer who through the power of social media received a kidney from a stranger is recovering at Emory University Hospital.

Doctors say that both Raleigh Callaway and Texas donor Chris Carroll are doing “incredibly well” following the life-saving organ transplant operation.

“I have always believed in God, and this just shows you that he is always working and is there, that he’s going to make a way for you,” Callaway, a Greensboro officer, said Sunday.

Carroll, who was discharged from Emory on Saturday, learned about Callaway’s plight in July after Kristi Callaway and her friend Brandy Angel turned to social media for help.

In the post, Callaway stood with his wife and their two young daughters who held a sign that read: “Our Daddy needs a kidney!” By that time, Callaway was in late stages of renal failure following complications of Type 2 Diabetes and high blood pressure.

Carroll, a health care consultant and grandfather from McKinney, Texas, said he saw the post and suddenly felt compelled to give.

“I’ve donated blood for most of my life, but I never considered giving a kidney,” said Carroll, who was discharged Saturday. “But when I saw this story I felt God calling me to do it.”

He was among hundreds who contacted Emory wanting to help. The Callaways’ original Facebook post resulted in more than 900 people contacting the hospital, said Dr. Nicole Turgeon, who performed the operations last week.

Turgeon credited the power of social media for not just saving Callaway’s life, but potentially many more. Of the hundreds who contacted Emory, more than 125 people are still being considered for transplant surgeries to other patients.

“The use of social media for these types of pleas really highlights the American spirit and shows how giving people are,” she said. “…If we can help not just Raleigh, but several others, that’s pretty amazing.”

Turgeon said without a transplant, Callaway would soon have needed dialysis treatments. That, she said, would have added complications to a potential transplant operation.

Both men are thriving following the operation, she said. Callaway is expected to be discharged from the hospital as soon as Monday.

Kristi Callaway said the incredible number of respondents prompted her and Angel to launch a nonprofit highlighting the stories of others who need a kidney donation. Her hope is that by personalizing their need through their website, CallawaysAngels.com, more people will be compelled to give.

She said the experience has strengthened her belief in others.

“I’ve have always tried to see the best in people, but there are certain things that go on every day that you can’t ignore. Sometimes you do start wondering: ‘Why can’t people be more loving and more considerate and more kind?’” she said. “This just shows me they can. They just need a reason. They need an outlet and something that speaks to them.”

Carroll said that to his surprise, he never doubted his decision.

“I believe God can change your heart and he put it on my heart to do this. I felt as strongly about getting this done as if it had been for my own dad,” he said.

Carroll and his wife, Veronica, said they felt an instant connection with the Callaways when they met earlier this month.

“We feel as blessed or more than Raleigh’s family through this, with all the outpouring of love from people,” Carroll said. “We feel that if you follow God’s plans, you never know what kind of blessings you will get.”

WHAT IS A PUMPKIN

Pumpkins, like other squash, are native to North America. Pumpkins are widely grown for commercial use, and are used both in food and recreation. Pumpkin pie, for instance, is a traditional part of Thanksgiving meals in the United States, although commercially canned pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie fillings are usually made from different kinds of winter squash than the pumpkins frequently carved as jack o’lanterns for decoration around Halloween.

Great Reasons To Keep Driving That Older Car

Sep 10, 2014 2

By Connie Alsobrook

old burnt car

Driving an older car gives the perception of not having any money to
purchase a new car. Why else would you be driving an car over 10 years
old. There are tons of reasons to drive your vintage car until, as they
“until the wheels fall off”.

Some individuals hold on to their older model cars for sentimental purposes. Automobiles are sometimes  passed down to another family member and even gifted in a will.  When this happens it makes giving up your vehicle very difficult because of all the precious memories that were experienced in that particular car.

While most of us love our old cars, and bragging rights as to who has the most miles, sometimes we do have to let go. Weigh your options and make the best decision for you and your family, not because someone else thinks you look better in a new car.

Here are a few things to consider……………………..

SAVINGS If you have had your car for more than 10 years, chances are you do not
have a car payment. Car payments minimum are about 250.00 per month, so
let say you have not made a vehicle payment for the last 5 years. You
would have saved at least 15,000. Throwing money into a new car just for the sake of having a newer model is not always the best decision. Again with a new car comes extra expenses, the up keep along is pricey.

INSURANCE The longer you have your automobile the less you pay for car insurance, and taxes. In some states if you keep your vehicle over 20 years it
is considered to be an antique and you are eligible for a tag that represents that.

MAINTENANCE When you have been driving your car for a number of years
you become very familiar with it and know immediately when there is a
problem. Parts for an older cars can be easily found at savage/junk yards.
Regular mechanic shops can service your vehicle, they are not required to visit a dealer, which will charge you twice as much for repairs.

RELIABILITY/SAFETY This is the most important thing when considering keeping your car.

  • Is your car unreliable in it’s old age?
  • Has your car left you stranded?
  • Is it unpredictable? Are there major
  • issues that need to be repaired that you cannot afford?
  • Are you locks still working?
  • Do your seat beats function properly?
  • Is it polluting the environment?
Reliability
Reliability

Here is a list of estimates for common replaced car parts to give you an idea of car payment vs repairs.

Spark Plugs $4.00 – $30.00
Alternator $120.00 – 300.00
Fuel Pump $179.00 -$226.00
Water pump $80.00 – $600.00
Clutch $15.00- $500.00
Starter $150.00 – $450.00

cannabis oil

Recently many states have legalize medical marijuana (MM), some individuals
are happy and other do not understand the benefits.

So far there are 21 states that have legalized MM, and 8 more states
are pending legislation to legalize.

1.Seizures Marijuana is defined as a muscle relaxant and has
“antispasmodic” ( a drug or an herb that suppresses muscle spasms)

children with multiple daily seizures are moving to Colorado for

GOOD4YOU: 5 Healthy Ways To Get Over a Break-Up

Aug 24, 2014 0

 By Connie Alsobrook

Sharing their lives with each other1. Exercise. When you endorphins start pumping through cardio exercise
you stress levels are lowered. Running, bike ride, speed walking, are
all good cardio enhancers.

Sitting in the house not eating, crying to friends, or moving around
is not good for your body. Do the opposite of what you want to do and
you will immediate feel better.

2. Think Of All The Good Things You Have. The loss is anything is painful,
especially when it is someone you once loved and thought you would
spend the rest of you life with.

After the breakup you focus of the negative things instead of all the
positive things in your life, because somehow we feel rejected. We
all have great things in our life, think of those and be grateful. Each
day when you get up think of one thing you are grateful for, and say it
out loud.

3. Give Back. Charity work always feel good, when you are able to do
something for someone else. Once you see you have helped another person
you get that warm fuzzy feeling back. Believe it, helping others does
help you.

4. Eat Your Favorite Food. Just the mere thought of our favorite food
sometimes makes us feel better. There are “feel good” foods that could be
your favorite as well. Here are a few of those: Grapefruit, blueberries
lettuce, and cranberries So go ahead and indulge on whatever it is you love (do not over do it).

5. Candles. Try not to think of candles for only romance. Candles are
used for many purposes, including relaxation. Light a few scent candles,
for aroma therapy and feel the calmness come over you.
