Virgin Hair Maintenance Tips

Jan 28, 2015 0

Get the full benefits of your virgin hair

In order to get the full benefits of your virgin hair maintenance, & care is an important part of maintaining longevity and shine. Keeping your hair extensions in tip top shape can be very tricky! The key to maintaining your investment starts from the day of receiving your hair/bundles.

• Virgin Hair should be treated as your own hair and cleansed regularly to maintain the health and shine of the hair.

• Once you receive your hair extensions always inspect the hair before installing it. Leave the bundles intact. If there are any issues with the hair you should notice it at this time.

• Always co-wash the hair before you have it installed. This is highly recommended for all 100% virgin hair. This should be done in order to transform the hair from it’s steam-processed state to it’s natural state.

• Do not cut your wefts/tracks. This causes the thread to unravel and create shedding and matting issues. If you must cut your tracks seal the wefts with weft sealer.

• To keep your hair and extensions properly moisturized. You should purchase a good natural oil such as argan oil, to prevent the hair from drying out and also give your hair a nice and healthy glow without weighing your hair down.

• A wide tooth comb and a paddle brush are the best tools to use when detangling your hair. It’s always best to detangle your hair before you wash and/or curl it. Be sure to section your hair off when brushing and detangling.

• Co-washing will add more moisture to your hair. You can co-wash your hair as often as you like. Some shampoos will strip the hair of all it’s moisture and the hair will become dry and tangled. Instead of always shampooing and conditioning, only condition (co-wash) your hair for 15- 30 minutes. The longer you deep condition your hair the softer and luxurious it becomes. Allow your hair to air dry for the best results!

• To avoid frizz never rub your hair with a towel, which can make frizz worse. Instead you should pat your hair dry.

• When coloring your hair extensions, please consult with a licensed professional before any coloring. Some hair colors must be achieved in steps, you may fry your hair extensions if not done properly! Any type of chemical altering strips the cuticle of the hair (at this point your virgin hair is no longer considered virgin hair).

• Heat is your hair biggest enemy. The more you use hot styling tools the shorter the life span of your hair. Use heat in moderation. High temperatures can damage the hair, including permanently altering the hair texture. Always use heat protectant! I highly recommend using flexi rods, perm rollers & steam rollers for curling your hair. Not only will your curls last longer but your hair won’t have any heat damage.

• It is important to manage your hair before you go to bed. Tie your hair up at night with a silk/satin scarf or a silk/satin bonnet. For wavy/curly textures I recommend putting 3-5 large twist or braids in your hair then placing it under a scarf or bonnet. For Straight textures I recommend wrapping your hair then placing it under a silk/satin scarf. Following this nightly routine will make your extensions last longer, look better, and prevent tangling which leads to excessive shedding.

The Wonders of Warm Water

Jan 22, 2015 0

Forget Energy Drinks.  Leave the Fad Diets in the dust.  The greatest wonder to our body is just a spigot away!  Water is your body’s natural fuel. Most of us start our mornings with a fresh, hot cup of coffee or tea to warm our bodies after getting out of bed. When we drink water, we tend to prefer it cold, but according to Ayurvedic medicine, we have it all wrong. Regularly drinking very warm water, especially in the morning, can heal our bodies, providing digestive power and reducing metabolic waste that could have built up in our immune system.

While drinking warm water may not suit your taste buds, it may be beneficial to put the caffeine and tea aside for your health’s sake. Our Editor, Connie Alsobrook, gives us the following reasons why:

1. Cleanses Digestion
A very warm cup of water in the morning can help cleanse your body by flushing out toxins. Water and other liquids help break down the food in your stomach and keep the digestive system on track. Warm water will help break down these foods even faster, making them easier for you to digest. Drinking cold water during or after a meal can actually harden the oil in consumed foods and therefore create a fat deposit in the intestine. Adding ice to processed cold water will strip it of natural-containing minerals as these minerals are essential to keeping the digestive tract healthy. Luckily, you can replace a glass of cold water with a warm one to aid digestion, especially after eating a meal.

2. Aids Constipation
At one point or another, many of us are plagued by this common stomach problem where we have little to no bowel movement. The strain felt during elimination, accompanied by bloating, is brought on by a lack of water in the body. Drinking very warm water in the morning on an empty stomach can help improve bowel movements and aid constipation while breaking down foods as they smoothly pass through the intestines. Stimulating the bowels will help return your body back to normal functioning.

3. Alleviates Pain
Warm water, considered to be nature’s most powerful home remedy, can help alleviate pain from menstruation to headaches. The heat from warm water is known to have a calming and soothing effect on the abdominal muscles, which can help provide instant relief for cramps and muscle spasms. According to Healthline.com, warm or hot water is usually better for cramps, as hot liquids increase blood flow to the skin and help relax the cramped muscles.

4. Sheds Those Extra Pounds
If you’re on a diet, chances are you’ve heard drinking a glass of warm water first thing in the morning can help with weight loss. Warm water increases body temperature, which therefore increases the metabolic rate. An increase in metabolic rate allows the body to burn more calories throughout the rate. It can also help the gastrointestinal tract and kidneys to function even better.

Physicians recommend drinking warm water in the morning, usually, with a polyphenol-rich lemon immersion, or with a tea shown to decrease free radical activity in the body. Drinking a glass of warm water and a lemon will help break down the adipose tissue, or body fat, in your body, and also control food craving due to lemon’s pectin fiber.

5. Improves Blood Circulation
The fat deposits in the body are eliminated along with accumulating deposits in the nervous system when you drink a glass of warm water. This flushes out the toxins that are circulating throughout the body and then enhances blood circulation. Making sure the muscles are relaxed will eliminate poor circulation and blood flow.

6. Prevents Premature Aging
Premature aging is a woman’s worst nightmare, but luckily, this can be prevented by drinking warm water. The presence of toxins in the body can lead to aging faster, but warm water can help cleanse the body from those toxins, while repairing skin cells to increase elasticity.

So, next time, ask for a glass of water with lemon… HOLD THE ICE, PLEASE!

Simple and Healthy Diabetic Dinners for the Whole Family

Nov 14, 2014 0

By: April Langdon

For families dinner is the central meal of the day. It’s the meal you are most often to partake together. Sharing not only the meal, but also the events of the day. Sharing the things that went well, as well as those that didn’t.

Making a diabetic dinner that everybody in the family wants to eat does not need to be a trial. If you follow some easy guidelines then you are most of the way there.

A dinner for diabetics does not need to be made out of any out of the ordinary ingredients or have anything other than the ingredients that are easily available at your local supermarket.

There is no need to prepare a different meal for the diabetic at the dinner table. In fact regardless of how many diabetics you may have in your family if everyone in the family eats using the strategy for a healthy diabetic dinner then everyone in the family is moving towards better health.

The basic guidelines for a diabetic dinner are also the guidelines for a healthy meal.

A diabetic dinner needs to be:

  • high in fiber
  • low in fat, sugar and salt
  • half full of vegetables

There may be some specific requirements for the diabetics in your family, taking into account what is required to balance their blood sugars that day. But in following these easy guidelines you are 80% of the way there.

Here are two swift, delicious meal ideas that everybody in the entire family will enjoy. They are both so easy that nearly anyone in the family can prepare them. They are suitable for all ages and are high in fiber, low in fat, sugar and salt and are half full of vegetables.

Ten Minute Tortillas

Take a tortilla (the better quality and more wholemeal the better) and line it with lettuce and sliced tomato, fill with a mix of heated canned beans and salsa, top with low-fat cheese and roll up. Serve with a salad (include as many different colored vegetables as you can) and brown rice.

Super Quick and Easy Chilli Beans

Brown 400g lean ground mince and pour off any excess fat, add 1 cup each of chopped or grated onion, celery, carrot, capsicum, 1 1/2 cans of low salt canned tomatoes, 1 can kidney beans, 1 t chilli powder, 1 t cumin, 1 t oregano (or have fun experimenting with some different spices) and cook until flavour has developed. Serve with some steamed broccoli and brown rice on the side.

10 Diabetes Superfoods

Nov 5, 2014 0

Ever see the top 10 lists for foods everyone should eat to superpower your diet? Ever wonder which will mesh with your diabetes meal plan? Wonder no more. Your list of the top 10 diabetes superfoods has arrived.

As with all foods, you need to work the diabetes superfoods into your individualized meal plan in appropriate portions.

All of the foods in our list have a low glycemic index or GI and provide key nutrients that are lacking in the typical western diet such as:

  • calcium
  • potassium
  • fiber
  • magnesium
  • vitamins A (as carotenoids), C, and E.

There isn’t research that clearly points to supplementation, so always think first about getting your nutrients from foods. Below is our list of superfoods to include in your diet.

 Beans

gnn anti-aging-red-kidney-beans

Whether you prefer kidney, pinto, navy, or black beans, you can’t find better nutrition than that provided by beans. They are very high in fiber, giving you about 1/3 of your daily requirement in just a ½ cup, and are also good sources of magnesium and potassium.

They are considered starchy vegetables, but ½ cup provides as much protein as an ounce of meat without the saturated fat. To save time you can use canned beans, but be sure to drain and rinse them to get rid of as much sodium as possible.

 Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

gnn green leafy veg.

Spinach, collards, kale – these powerhouse foods are so low in calories and carbohydrate. You can’t eat too much.

 Citrus Fruit

gnn citrus_fruits

Grapefruit, oranges, lemons and limes. Pick your favorites and get part of your daily dose of soluble fiber and vitamin C.

 Sweet Potatoes

gnn sweet potatoes

A starchy vegetable packed full of vitamin A and fiber. Try in place of regular potatoes for a lower GI alternative.

 Berries

gnn blueberries

Which are your favorites: blueberries, strawberries or another variety? Regardless, they are all packed with antioxidants, vitamins and fiber. Make a parfait alternating the fruit with light, non-fat yogurt for a new favorite dessert. Try our Superfood Smoothie recipe.

 Tomatoes

gnn tomatoes

An old standby where everyone can find a favorite. The good news is that no matter how you like your tomatoes, pureed, raw, or in a sauce, you’re eating vital nutrients like vitamin C, iron, vitamin E.

Fish High in Omega-3 Fatty Acids

gnn salmon

Salmon is a favorite in this category. Stay away from the breaded and deep fat fried variety… they don’t count in your goal of 6-9 ounces of fish per week.

 Whole Grains

gnn wheat

It’s the germ and bran of the whole grain you’re after.  It contains all the nutrients a grain product has to offer. When you purchase processed grains like bread made from enriched wheat flour, you don’t get these. A few more of the nutrients these foods offer are magnesium, chromium, omega 3 fatty acids and folate.

Pearled barley and oatmeal are a source of fiber and potassium.

 Nuts

gnn walnuts

An ounce of nuts can go a long way in providing key healthy fats along with hunger management. Other benefits are a dose of magnesium and fiber.

Some nuts and seeds, such as walnuts and flax seeds, also contain omega-3 fatty acids.

 Fat-free Milk and Yogurt
gnn yogurt

Everyone knows dairy can help build strong bones and teeth. In addition to calcium, many fortified dairy products are a good source of vitamin D. More research is emerging on the connection between vitamin D and good health.

Some of the above list can be tough on the budget depending on the season and where you live. Look for lower cost options such as fruit and vegetables in season or frozen or canned fish.

Foods that every budget can live with year round are beans and rolled oats or barley that you cook from scratch

New Apple Ingredient Discovery Keeps Muscles Strong!

New Apple Ingredient Discovery Keeps Muscles Strong!
by: Michael Clonts

Natural Component of Apple Peels Found To Help Prevent Muscle WeakeningIn search of an effective method to prevent muscle wasting that comes with illness and aging, researchers have located a natural compound that is very promising. The findings reported in the June issue of Cell Metabolism (a Cell Press publication), identify a natural component of apple peels known as Ursolic Acid as a promising newnutritional therapy for the widespread and debilitating condition that affects nearly everyone at one time or another.”Muscle wasting is a frequent companion of illness and aging,” explained researchers from The University of Iowa, Iowa City. “It prolongs hospitalization, delays recoveries and in some cases prevents people going back home. It isn’t well understood and there is no medicine for it.”The research team first looked at what happens to gene activity in muscles under conditions that promote weakening. Those studies turned up 63 genes that change in response to fasting in both people and mice and another 29 that shift their expression in the muscles of both people who are fasting and those with spinal cord injury. Comparison of those gene expression signatures to the signatures of cells treated with more than 1300 bio-active small molecules led them to ursolic acid as a compound with effects that might counteract those of atrophy.”Ursolic Acid is an interesting natural compound,” they said. “It’s part of a normal diet as a component of apple peels. They always say that an apple a day keeps the doctor away…”The researchers next gave Ursolic Acid to fasted laboratory subjects. Those experiments showed that ursolic acid could protect against muscle weakening as predicted. When ursolic acid was added to the food of normal subjects for a period of weeks, their muscles grew. Those effects were traced back to enhanced insulin signaling in muscle and to corrections in the gene signatures linked to atrophy.

The subjects given ursolic acid also became leaner and had lower blood levels of glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides. The findings therefore suggest that ursolic acid may be responsible for some of the overall benefits of healthy eating.

“We know if you eat a balanced diet like mom told us to eat you get this material,” the researchers explained “People who eat junk food don’t get this.”

It is not yet clear whether the findings will translate to human patients, but the goal now is to “figure out if this can help people.” If so, they don’t yet know whether Ursolic Acid at levels that might be consumed as part of a normal diet might or might not be enough.

Foods To Eat During Cold and Flu Season

Sep 25, 2014 0

By Connie Alsobrook

Here are a few foods to keep you healthy during cold and flu season.

Vitamin C, this is found in citrus foods and is very refreshing. Oranges,
grapefruit, lemons, and limes.

Garlic, To get the best benefits from garlic, crush the cloves with
the flat side of a knife. Some say wait about 3 minutes
before eating or adding to your food. To get rid of some of the smell
of garlic, squeeze half a lemon in a glass of water and drink after
eating garlic.

Zinc is in chicken and other meats. This is the main reason
grandmother use to make a pot of chicken noodle soup for that flu or
common cold.

Yogurt contains probiotics, organisms such as bacteria or yeast
that are believed to improve health. Research suggests low levels
of vitamin D can be linked to a seasonal increase in colds and flu
plus a higher incidence of respiratory infections.

GOOD4YOU: 5 Healthy Ways To Get Over a Break-Up

Aug 24, 2014 0

 By Connie Alsobrook

Sharing their lives with each other1. Exercise. When you endorphins start pumping through cardio exercise
you stress levels are lowered. Running, bike ride, speed walking, are
all good cardio enhancers.

Sitting in the house not eating, crying to friends, or moving around
is not good for your body. Do the opposite of what you want to do and
you will immediate feel better.

2. Think Of All The Good Things You Have. The loss is anything is painful,
especially when it is someone you once loved and thought you would
spend the rest of you life with.

After the breakup you focus of the negative things instead of all the
positive things in your life, because somehow we feel rejected. We
all have great things in our life, think of those and be grateful. Each
day when you get up think of one thing you are grateful for, and say it
out loud.

3. Give Back. Charity work always feel good, when you are able to do
something for someone else. Once you see you have helped another person
you get that warm fuzzy feeling back. Believe it, helping others does
help you.

4. Eat Your Favorite Food. Just the mere thought of our favorite food
sometimes makes us feel better. There are “feel good” foods that could be
your favorite as well. Here are a few of those: Grapefruit, blueberries
lettuce, and cranberries So go ahead and indulge on whatever it is you love (do not over do it).

5. Candles. Try not to think of candles for only romance. Candles are
used for many purposes, including relaxation. Light a few scent candles,
for aroma therapy and feel the calmness come over you.
